“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”
John 14:1-3
God’s encouragement…
I recently attended the funeral of a dear friend. It’s been almost 40 years since we met. Our friendship endured all that life brought to us from the joyful to the tragic. In her final trial with pancreatic cancer she shared, “I am in God’s hands and He will place me where I am supposed to be.” When we gathered to honor her and celebrate her life, we were comforted by the words of John 14. Jesus tells us where God will place her—in His house with Him.
In this passage from John’s gospel, Jesus instructs us by telling us to believe in God and in Him. Then He shares a glimpse of heaven with us! He tells us His Father has a house and it has room for us. He assures us that He goes before us to prepare. He comes to us and takes us so that where He is we may be also. In this passage, Jesus tells us how our earthly life transitions to eternal life. In this life we follow Him. He comes and takes us to the next life.
We will all miss the physical presence of this lovely woman, yet we know her life in God’s house has begun! She believed in God. She believed in Jesus. Her death here was her homecoming there. She is living in her forever home, the place Jesus has prepared for her!
