“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

John: 8:12

God’s encouragement…

The most significant and important decision my parents made on my behalf was to baptize me as an infant. Through this sacrament I received forgiveness of my sins, was rescued from death and the devil, and received eternal salvation (Luther’s Small Catechism). Titus 3:5 notes I was “saved through the washing of rebirth and renewal of the Holy Spirit.” This Holy Spirit came to dwell within me that day, becoming my “Helper” in matters of faith—and life—ever since.

Understanding what took place has been a years-long journey for me. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:12, “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.” God is with us always, even when we can’t recognize His presence because we see dimly.

This is why I’ve come to see my Baptism as the pivotal point in my life, even though I had no part in making the decision. Hebrews 7:25 tell us that Jesus always lives to make intercession for all who draw near to God through Him. We can draw near in all stages of life, beginning in infancy. His intercessions call us to walk out of darkness into His light. I affirm by my experience that He interceded in my life and stopped me from engaging in activities that could harm me or others. He interceded and presented me with opportunities that allowed Him to bless and benefit others through me. Each time, Jesus made the “mirror” less dim.

I’ve learned that Baptism isn’t something left in the past after the Sacrament has been given. Our Baptism calls us to confession and repentance each day, and provides forgiveness each day. We who have received so much from Jesus are called to follow Him, to bear His image. Just as He did, we are to proclaim His message of salvation to the world. We are also to mirror His interactions with others as observed when He dwelt among us. Praise be to God, these interactions are recorded in the Bible and continue to teach us today. Hallelujah!
